Saarbrücken: Win on Abendwind
Today I went to Saarbrucken where I had two rides - Smoke On The Water for trainer Stefan Birner and Abendwind for trainer Waldemar Hickst.
It was clear that the former Group winner Abendwind would be favourite - he is ranked at 80 kilos GAG but he is not in form. And he had to compete against former Group horses - so I thought to myself let’s see what happens and what he has to offer. It was close but he was enjoying it. In the paddock he was very relaxed and professional – telling us I show you something. We had a good race. I wanted to attack a little bit later but Andre was “dying” in front of me so the only choice was to “go for home”. I do know the tracks in the Southwest but I was really surprised the way Abendwind accelerated and how he always had more in the tank to defend his lead. It was my first ride for Waldemar Hickst – I was very pleased with the chance to ride for him and with the win of course.
And then in the main race sh... happens. I was riding Stefan’s Smoke who was travelling incredibly well and you think you just can’t lose. But all of a sudden he stops and you know something is wrong as we found out after the race. So Smoke is excused.
Yesterday I had a very good result at Düsseldorf. I was steering the rank outsider Tweet Lady in a handicap class III for trainer Bernd Friesdorf. After a break of almost eight months we finished in third place. She got tired in the end - but a brave lady.
